"Ascent: Blue River"

Two 25-foot (8 meter) paintings commissioned for the
Princeton University Chapel,
May 1999

"Ascent: Blue River" was created to reflect colors from the chancel window, motifs from the chapel architecture and organ case, and "Threshold," paintings on silk commissioned in 1997. The river is a common metaphor for life, including birth and death. In the visual language of these works, I have included various currents combined with a symbolic reflection of the world beyond or within. As the architecture lifts our eyes upward, the painting lines curve inward and back to the viewer and participant.
